Their 1001 Night party was the warmest of embraces, ushering everyone into a fascination mode. We dreamt up of camel caravans plying the legendary King’s Highway transporting frankincense in exchange for spices while Nabataean tradesmen, of Muslim delights and zealous craftsmen, of antiquity, tradition, and hospitality, a heady mix of textures and threads, aromas and flavors to bring about a Souk laden with gifts and surprises. Our interpretation of the ancient rolling out of the carpet meant creating a vivid scene where everything would come together to weave a play sure to besiege the senses as everyone would wonder, where do I even begin? The real draw of the souks is the captivating atmosphere, the hustle, and bustle. From pastries to pottery, wooden carved boxes, spices, and a range of textiles, and from stations of treats, street food, traditional ornaments including lanterns, teapots, lamps, Berber carpets and smoking pipes, to encountering a tannery in action, kissarias for clothing and Bijouteries for jewelry, as well as local bands playing their Gnaoua musical instruments, nothing was left to chance. If there was one word to describe everything that went on that day (and believe us we can talk for days about it) that would have to be: cornucopia!
